OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES

BRICS countries have become an important force in the global trading and geopolitical system and are also known to have significant influence on regional affairs. Several other countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS. Against this backdrop, the BRICS Africa Symposium (BAS) seeks to provide an independent platform for useful insights and valuable perspectives on implications of the planned expansion of BRICS first proposed in March 2017. The expected outcome of the symposium will be a published set of substantive policy-based recommendations on new and innovative approaches to navigate the dynamics and challenges of Africa's relationship with BRICS. It's key objectives are to:

  • Promote and strengthen understanding and collaboration on BRICS issues, especially those affecting Africa;

  • Enable dialogue, outreach and impactful interactions between core stakeholders across sectors in BRICS countries;

  • Analyse and evaluate the BRICS framework or processes and recommend actionable policies or solutions accordingly;

  • Create an on-going consultative forum to encourage productive commercial, political and cultural cooperation between BRICS nations;

  • Publish peer-reviewed interdisciplinary research focused on contributing to evidence-based policymaking targeting relevant epistemic communities.

"We want this to be a special moment not only to South Africa, but to our continent as well, as we will seek to advance the African agenda at the BRICS platform."

Cyril Ramaphosa

President of South Africa
